Poets Corner Reading Series

HOME

I do not think poetry is more, or less, necessary than food, shelter,
health, education, decent working conditions. It is as necessary.
~ Adrienne Rich, What is Found There

Poets Corner stands in solidarity with Black communities in Canada, in the United States, and worldwide
in the struggle against systemic racism and injustice.

That time and that time and that time the outside blistered the inside of you, words outmaneuvered the years, had you in a chokehold, every part roughed up, the eyes dripping.

That’s the bruise the ice in the heart was meant to ice.

To arrive like this every day for it to be like this to have so many memories and no other memory than these for as long as they can be remembered to remember this.

Through a share of all remembering, a measure of all memory, is breath and to breathe you have to create a truce–

a truce with the patience of a stethoscope.

Poets Corner is a Vancouver-based monthly poetry reading series that takes place on the third Wednesday

of each month, a friendly and welcoming space where both emerging and established poets can showcase their work. It is also the perfect forum for fans who unabashedly love poetry. Speaking into a microphone in front of a live audience can be unnerving for some — even for seasoned writers. But our forum is a safe and supportive place where only a handful of poets have been pelted with tomatoes. 🙂  Seriously, all we want to do is foster an appreciation for talented poets while helping to raise the profile of poetry. Our gatherings are convivial, and our support for anyone who braves the microphone is unconditional.

If you’re new to Poets Corner, you’ll be given an absurdly warm welcome. We’d love for you to join us.

Events are two hours long, starting at 7:30 p.m.  We usually have two featured poets and an open mic.

Occasionally we have a themed night, such as Emerging Indigenous Poets or Work Poetry. We may also host, from time to time, a special reading or book launch that will take place outside this schedule. We have a newly minted YouTube channel and a monthly newsletter (please subscribe!)

You can find additional poetry-related news here as well as notices of our upcoming events.

For the past two years we’ve been kindly hosted by Patricia Massy at Massy Books. When we resume live readings after the COVID-19 crisis, we will be locating to Fairleigh Dickinson University in Yaletown, just a bit west of our old location at Massy Books!  You can also join our Facebook Group and follow us on Twitter and Instagram.
